The Illuminae Files #2

The highly anticipated sequel to the instant New York Times bestseller that critics are calling “out-of-this-world awesome.”

Moving to a space station at the edge of the galaxy was always going to be the death of Hanna’s social life. Nobody said it might actually get her killed.
The sci-fi saga that began with the breakout bestseller Illuminae continues on board the Jump Station Heimdall, where two new characters will confront the next wave of the BeiTech assault.
Hanna is the station captain’s pampered daughter; Nik the reluctant member of a notorious crime family. But while the pair are struggling with the realities of life aboard the galaxy’s most boring space station, little do they know that Kady Grant and the Hypatia are headed right toward Heimdall, carrying news of the Kerenza invasion.
When an elite BeiTech strike team invades the station, Hanna and Nik are thrown together to defend their home. But alien predators are picking off the station residents one by one, and a malfunction in the station’s wormhole means the space-time continuum might be ripped in two before dinner. Soon Hanna and Nik aren’t just fighting for their own survival; the fate of everyone on the Hypatia—and possibly the known universe—is in their hands.
But relax. They’ve totally got this. They hope.
Once again told through a compelling dossier of emails, IMs, classified files, transcripts, and schematics, Gemina raises the stakes of the Illuminae Files, hurling readers into an enthralling new story that will leave them breathless.

ILLUMINAE

For fans of Marie Lu and James Dashner comes the first book in an epic new series.
This morning, Kady thought breaking up with Ezra was the hardest thing she’d have to do.
This afternoon, her planet was invaded.

The year is 2575, and two rival megacorporations are at war over a planet that’s little more than an ice-covered speck at the edge of the universe. Too bad nobody thought to warn the people living on it. With enemy fire raining down on them, Kady and Ezra—who are barely even talking to each other—are forced to fight their way onto one of the evacuating fleet, with an enemy warship in hot pursuit.

But their problems are just getting started. A deadly plague has broken out and is mutating, with terrifying results; the fleet’s AI, which should be protecting them, may actually be their enemy; and nobody in charge will say what’s really going on. As Kady hacks into a tangled web of data to find the truth, it’s clear only one person can help her bring it all to light: the ex-boyfriend she swore she’d never speak to again!

Told through a fascinating dossier of hacked documents—including emails, schematics, military files, IMs, medical reports, interviews, and more—Illuminae is the first book in a heart-stopping, high-octane trilogy about lives interrupted, the price of truth, and the courage of everyday heroes.

Uprooted
Naomi Novik

“Our Dragon doesn’t eat the girls he takes, no matter what stories they tell outside our valley. We hear them sometimes, from travelers passing through. They talk as though we were doing human sacrifice, and he were a real dragon. Of course that’s not true: he may be a wizard and immortal, but he’s still a man, and our fathers would band together and kill him if he wanted to eat one of us every ten years. He protects us against the Wood, and we’re grateful, but not that grateful.”

Agnieszka loves her valley home, her quiet village, the forests and the bright shining river. But the corrupted Wood stands on the border, full of malevolent power, and its shadow lies over her life.

Her people rely on the cold, driven wizard known only as the Dragon to keep its powers at bay. But he demands a terrible price for his help: one young woman handed over to serve him for ten years, a fate almost as terrible as falling to the Wood.

The next choosing is fast approaching, and Agnieszka is afraid. She knows—everyone knows—that the Dragon will take Kasia: beautiful, graceful, brave Kasia, all the things Agnieszka isn’t, and her dearest friend in the world. And there is no way to save her.

But Agnieszka fears the wrong things. For when the Dragon comes, it is not Kasia he will choose.

Review Uprooted by Naomi Novik

He was a thing of books and alembics to me, library and laboratory.

Uprooted by Naomi Novik has that particular feel of an old tale told in front of the fireplace, surrounded by a warm, old and comfy blanket, with a cup of tea or chocolate at hand. It makes you imagine  a tale of adventures, foe, great feat and, maybe, an everlasting love. I don’t like to spoiler things for anyone and with this book it can happen easily. Thus I will not tell anything too specific about the story, you can already decide if it is intriguing or not by reading the plot and the excerpt. I will tell you only this…. Uprooted gave me all of what I listed above and even more. I’m sorry to be so late in speaking of this book because it was one of the best of 2015 for me but it’s not always so simple to put my thoughts on words after reading a book I liked so much.
It starts with a premise non truly original but then takes unespected turns because of the story behind. A story that the author keeps firmly secret till the end, when all is finally clear to the reader. Therefore it’s all revealed by degrees so as to truly appreciate the world Novik has invented. It was this author’s skill that made me appreciate the book more…it’s not really common to find an author that can keep the reader oblivious for the majority of a story, much less for an entire book! And we can’t forget about the MCs! Both the female and male MC are truly inspired. The opposite one of the other. Him, the Dragon. A gruff, rude, sophisticated, sociopathic know-it-all (yeah, I know but he is such a character XD). Her, the peasant. A common, ignorant, wild, unkempt young thing. It is obvious that the clash of wills soon makes any kind of fear Agnieszka could have ever felt pass quickly.
Before this book, I hadn’t read anything of this author but it’s sure now that she has gained a new follower.

JULIET MARILLIER: Wildwood Dancing – Wildwood #1

Wildwood Dancing
Juliet Marillier

Wildwood #1

High in the Transylvanian woods, at the castle Piscul Draculi, live five daughters and their doting father. It’s an idyllic life for Jena, the second eldest, who spends her time exploring the mysterious forest with her constant companion, a most unusual frog. But best by far is the castle’s hidden portal, known only to the sisters. Every Full Moon, they alone can pass through it into the enchanted world of the Other Kingdom. There they dance through the night with the fey creatures of this magical realm.
But their peace is shattered when Father falls ill and must go to the southern parts to recover, for that is when cousin Cezar arrives. Though he’s there to help the girls survive the brutal winter, Jena suspects he has darker motives in store. Meanwhile, Jena’s sister has fallen in love with a dangerous creature of the Other Kingdom–an impossible union it’s up to Jena to stop.
When Cezar’s grip of power begins to tighten, at stake is everything Jena loves: her home, her family, and the Other Kingdom she has come to cherish. To save her world, Jena will be tested in ways she can’t imagine–tests of trust, strength, and true love.

A beautiful legend that only Juliet Marillier could have weaved so magically. An incredible fable, full of adventure, love and that bit of darkness perfect for grown ups.

Some quotes from the book:

“I suppose the secret was not completely ours; Gogu knew. But even if frogs could talk, Gogu would never have told. Ever since I’d found him long ago, crouched all by himself in the forest, dazed and hurt, I had known I could trust him more than anyone else in the world.”

“It looked as if it had grown up out of the forest, with an assortment of bits and pieces sprouting from every corner: tiny turrets, long covered walkways, squat round towers, arches, and flagpoles.”

“At Full Moon, everything was different, everything was upside down and back to front. Doors opened that were closed on other days, and those whom the human world feared became friends. The Bright Between was a gateway: not a threat, but a promise.”

“Our cousin was not alone among the folk of the valley in his attitudes. There were those who believed the Other Kingdom to be a devilish place, full of presences out to destroy humankind. The margin of the wildwood was hedged about with crucifixes; the trees on its rim were thick with protective amulets.”

“That’s not really all you’re asking, Jena.” Tati turned her big eyes on me; their expression was cool now. “Anyway, you aren’t asking, are you? You’re telling. I can’t go through the portal if you won’t help open it. What you really want is that I never see Sorrow again. You think the moment I get up and dance with some fellow Aunt Bogdana’s dredged up for me, I’ll forget all about him. Well, I won’t. And I won’t go to your stupid party. You don’t understand.”

“The sun set beyond the colored windows four more times, and inside our chamber the stories went on. Not all were joyful tales; we needed to acknowledge that love was not just kisses, smiles, and fulfillment, but also sacrifice, compromise, and hard work.”

Eveline Armstrong is fiercely loved and protected by her powerful clan, but considered “touched” to outsiders. Beautiful, fey, with a level, intent gaze, she doesn’t speak. No one, not even her family, knows that she cannot hear. Eveline taught herself to read lips and allows the outside world view her as daft, content to stay with her family. But when an arranged marriage with a rival clan makes Graeme Montgomery her husband, she accepts her duty—unprepared for the delights to come. Graeme is a rugged warrior with a voice so deep and powerful she can hear it, and hands and kisses so tender and skilled he awakens her deepest passions.
Graeme is intrigued by his new bride, whose silent lips are ripe with temptation, whose bright, intelligent eyes can see into his soul. As intimacy deepens, he learns her secret. But when clan rivalries and dark deeds threaten the wife he has only begun to cherish, the Scottish warrior will move heaven and earth to save the woman who has awakened his heart to the beautiful song of a rare and magical love.

____

I can’t tell you how much I loved this novel.
Ok, I’m quite biased. When I find in the plot a Scottish setting (and obviously with Highlanders ;)), a main character beautiful but fragile due to a physical problem (in this case the deafness), a war between clans and a Laird proud but tender … ok , you already know! I melt in a puddle.
And if the expectations are not only met …but more! What can I say?
Only this last thing, it made me cry. At some point in the story … you know, when you empathize so much that emotions flow uncontrolled and you find yourself crying like a fool. Here you are.
Surely my first approach to this author was very lucky (oh yeah! Centered in one shot! An uncommon luck  seeing the last novels I read ;)) … now I can’t wait for the sequels. The second novel, Highlander Most Wanted will be released in February 2013 … not so much to wait … I can do it! 😉

Highlands
Peace has finally come to the highlands, King Alexander II can be pleased … if not for one thing.
Two of his most powerful allies are at war with each other, but he can’t allow the situation to continue. He needs a united, and ready to respond to his call, Scotland. Not a Scotland engaged in internal conflicts that cause the death of valuable men.
The solution? A wedding!
So, by royal decree, Eveline Armstrong -the “touched” daughter of the Laird – and Graeme Montgomery -Laird of his clan- find themselves betrothed with the order to cease immediately the hostilities.
Graeme ‘s pride is injured but he can’t put in danger the whole clan for an egoistic feeling. So he meets the murderers of his father, to proceed with the marriage… though the anger burns every second much brighter: not only because he will become related to the people who hates from the cradle, but considering the rumors about his future wife, he cannot even hope in a normal marital life. In an heir.
On the other hand Eveline, who for some time had resigned herself to a meaningless life, is probably the only one who hasn’t so many bad thoughts for the upcoming event. Immediately after the incident that brought her from a normal life to one without sound, Evie (for a reason I can’t tell you or I will spoil your reading ;)) thought it was better to pretend to be mindless. And she learned to read lips in order to didn’t feel totally unrelated to the world around her.
Now, this wedding presents the opportunity to begin a new life, where she will build her own family.
It’s true, the difficulties that lie ahead are so many! Away from a family that loves her, in an hostile clan, without friends…
But the first meeting with her future husband present many fascinations and hopefully an interesting future for they both.

I dare not tell you more, infact I have already said too much … read the novel, if you like as much as me a romance novel of this kind I’m also sure you will love Never Seduce a Scot!
